In a rapidly changing and globalising world classical problem solving approaches are severely challenged by new and evolving security issues. Security and development challenges prevalent in developing societies that were seemingly peripheral to global considerations are fast converging with emerging challenges in the more developed societies of the Global North. The impacts of terror related crises and violent conflicts such as Al Shabaab in Somalia, Boko Haram in Nigeria or humanitarian and environmental crisis in the Sahel, are felt in places far beyond the immediate locales. Conventional approaches to crisis management and conflict resolution including those employed by institutions of global governance such as the United Nations are proving inadequate. Are traditional approaches still fit for purpose? Are we ignoring potential solutions that are marginal to the more visible global approaches? What emerging leadership dynamics will shape peace and stability for societies of the future in Africa and the developing world? These questions demand deeper reflection given the urgency of the current security environment globally.

About The Speaker 演讲嘉宾

’Funmi Olonisakin is Interim Vice President & Vice-Principal (International) and Professor of Security, Leadership & development is at King’s College London. She has been founding Director of the African Leadership centre (ALC), which aims to build the next generation of African scholars and analysts generating cutting edge knowledge for security and development in Africa; and Director of the Conflict, Security and Development Group (CSDG) at King’s College London from 2003 to 2013.

Prior to this, she worked in the Office of the United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Children and Armed Conflict. Olonisakin has positioned her work to serve as a bridge between academia and the worlds of policy and practice. Her research focuses on issues at the security-development nexus on which she has published extensively. Her most recent research has focused on “Reframing narratives of Peace and State Building in Africa” and on “Future Peace, Society and the State in Africa”.

Olonisakin is a member of the Advisory Group of Experts for the UN Progress Study on Youth, Peace and Security and a Distinguished Fellow of the Geneva Centre for Security Policy and Chair of the International Advisory Council of the Thabo Mbeki African Leadership Institute (TMALI).
