2016年9月10日上午，院长李稻葵在清华大学苏世民书院首届新生开学典礼上的讲话原文：

尊敬的刘延东副总理，
尊敬的陈宝生部长，
尊敬的邱勇校长、陈旭书记，
尊敬的苏世民先生及夫人，
尊敬的各位嘉宾、各位朋友，
苏世民书院开创届学者们，
女士们、先生们，
大家上午好！

首先，我想感谢过去六年以来支持书院发展的国内外捐赠者，我想用你们更熟悉的语言表达我们的敬意和谢意。

Today is China’s National Teachers’ day. As teachers, we thank you for making our best dream come true. 2500 years ago, China’s iconic educator and sage, Mencius, said that one of the most enjoyable things in life is to gather together the best talents of the world and cultivate them into future leaders. 得天下英才而育之。Thank you, Mr.Schwarzman, and all the donors for your generous giving and tireless efforts. We, as operators of the College, will strive to make sure that the Schwarzman College becomes the highest quality private jet in your philanthropy fleet. We have already taken off and will be cruising at higher altitude than most others. Let us say goodbye to the frustration and anxieties of preparing for takeoff. Now, please sit back, enjoy the flight, and we will report back to you periodically. And of course, you are welcome to visit our cockpit anytime you want. But most importantly, please enjoy this flight with us.

接下来，我谨代表苏世民书院全体教师和员工对刘延东副总理和邱勇校长表达我们的心声。我们将竭尽全力、精心耕耘。我们要让来自全球各地的书院学子，从内心体悟到，中国改革开放的伟大成就绝非偶然，其底蕴是5000年中华文明的沉淀，理解和欣赏中华文明是所有有志于推动世界和平与繁荣的世界领导人的必修课。我们也要通过各种各样的校园活动，让苏世民学者们深刻理解，清华大学在上一个百年培养出一代又一代社会栋梁，这也绝非偶然，其底蕴来自于厚德载物、自强不息的精神基因，而苏世民学者将会把这种清华基因在全世界发扬光大！

Finally, on behalf of our faculty and staff, I would like to speak to our pioneering class of the Schwarzman Scholars. You are most extraordinary and will shape the DNA of our College. We are exceedingly happy to see that in the very first three weeks, you have already started to shape the Spirit of Schwarzman Scholars: Understanding, Cooperation, and Leadership.

Yes, leadership ultimately is why you come to the Schwarzman College. On the opening day of the College, let me end my speech by offering you a one-minute lecture on the Chinese tradition of leadership. A classic of Confucianism is called < 大学>, which today means “university”. < 大学> advocates six steps for a young talent to grow into a true leader. Step 1, < 格物致知>, that is, study in order to understand the world; Step 2, < 诚意正心>, that is, straighten your heart and motivation to have social responsibility; Step 3，< 修身>，that is to cultivate your own body and behavior; Step 4 is < 齐家>，which is to establish your family and manage your family affairs properly. Today, this perhaps also means manage well your circle of friends in your Facebook and WeChat. Step 5 is < 治国>，that is to govern your country by managing public affairs; Step 6 and finally, it is < 平天下>, that is to make peace and prosperity in the world.

Indeed, making peace and prosperity in the world should be the sublime goal of your life-long journey.

Let the journey start today at the Schwarzman College!
