Course Description

The Business Sustainability Leadership in China and Globally course addresses how companies and other institutions can lead to create a more sustainable world. Global economic expansion has brought unprecedented economic prosperity. At the same time,economic growth is putting our planet at risk. Climate change, water degradation,pollution, biodiversity loss, deforestation, population pressure, forced labor, gender inequality and food security are just some of the environmental and social consequences of our current system. A wide range of stakeholders - customers, employees,nongovernmental organizations, investors and governments – are calling on firms to be accountable for how they make their profits. At the same time, businesses are experiencing vulnerabilities in operations and supply chains. Action by business is critical to address today’s social and environmental challenges. In response, high performing companies are moving beyond philanthropy and compliance, and using the lens of sustainability to address core risks and seize new opportunities. Some are pioneering new purpose-driven business structures. This course focuses primarily on enterprises and examines why and how firms integrate sustainability into their operations. However, the conceptual frameworks and tools presented in this class are applicable to a wide range of institutions.
