Course Description

This course is an overview China’s trajectory since the 1980s, and to place its historic economic advance in comparative perspective. We will examine how China’s trajectory compares with other former socialist countries and East Asian “miracle” economies,and what explains the China difference. We will look closely at the growth model that has driven China’s advance, and the challenges involved in shifting to a new growth model. We will also look closely at the ways that China’s economy is in many waysunique: the fiscal and taxation system that funds the government; the ways that the domestic economy is walled off from global forces; the financial system that funds economic activity, and the ownership and control of China’s corporations. In all these ways, China’s economy offers a sharp contrast with all other major economies. Finally,we will examine widely discussed limits of China’s economic model and problems that must be addressed in the coming years, in particular the implications of high debt leverage in the corporate sector and among local governments, and prospects for China’s continuing advance at present and in the near future.
