Course Description（Global Affairs Overview）

This two-module core course in global affairs examines China’s emergence as a global actor in international affairs alongside the critical question of how to enhance collective action in the face of multiple transboundary, geopolitical, and planetary crises. The first module on China’s role in the world focuses on China’s global interactions and its contemporary policies and practices across diverse regions of the world. The second module on Governing Global Challenges examines major debates over global leadership, governance, and institutions. We then look in greater depth at global issues across six pathways: artificial intelligence, regulation, and ethics; climate change and the global environment; arms control and non-proliferation; global public health; global inequality; and the global governance of migration. The module concludes with student-led panels debating the intersections across the six pathways and the implications for global governance.
China’s Role in the World (Module 2)
This module provides a composite overview of China’s emergence as a global actor in international affairs. In the first part of the module, we shall engage with current theoretical debates over China’s role in the world, address China’s global interactions from an historical standpoint, and then critically examine contemporary Chinese strategy in relation to global development, security, and governance. The second part of the module takes a regional approach towards looking at China’s global engagement in particular regions of the world as well as new frontiers beyond sovereign boundaries.Four panel sessions include China in the Neighbourhood, China in Africa, China in the Middle East, and China in Outer Space. For the concluding session, students will present their ideas on the future of China’s role in global affairs, taking into consideration diverse perspectives and modes of inquiry.
