爱小龙(Noal Elbot):
Akshay, Noah and I are very honored to present you with three perspectives in two languages: Where were we before? Where are we now? And where will we be in the future?
Although our 110 scholars, from 31 different countries and regions, have achieved global contributions across diverse platforms, it is the same goals we share that eventually brought us together.
One year ago, while Mingyuan and I were volunteer teachers for rural schools in western China, over the Tibetan Plateau, Surya was similarly constructing schools in Nepal to help children obtain a better education. One year ago, while Larry was busy researching a malaria vaccine in Malawi, on another continent, Bonnie was working on conserving endangered shark species in Myanmar. While Max was conducting a survey in rural Uganda on political accountability, across the ocean, Kyle was working at McKinsey, helping a US state government reform its healthcare system.
爱小龙(Noal Elbot):
Our community is as fresh and new as the beautiful facilities of our college, yet many in this global cohort already feel like old friends. Over the past three weeks, every moment has carried rich experience and camaraderie. My fellow scholars wanted to share a few of these moments:
From Teddy - "The communal bonding of a spontaneous dance party at the BBQbonfire in Huai Rou."
From Jose - "An impromptu talent show while meeting our Tsinghua University buddies that displayed harmony, music and humor overcoming any cultural, religious or linguistic difference."
From Belinda - "A 4-hour long conversation with another scholar while winding up and down the great wall."
We are incredibly grateful for the opportunities offered by the world-class staff of Schwarzman College and Tsinghua University, by our esteemed professors and lecturers, and by the incredible resources contributed by Mr. Schwarzman and the donor community. Over the past three weeks, we have also discovered how lucky we are to have each other, in this year and into the future, as the friendships forged in this college form the fabric of this program’s global mission.
沙艾瑞(Akshay Shah):
Thank you Noah. So where do we scholars want to go once we graduate? Similar to the diversity of backgrounds that Claire alluded to, we have a diversity of aspirations and goals. But we all do share a common belief that, “to whom much is given, much will be required”,
It is in this spirit that I would like to ask my class to place their right hands over their heart as I recite our class pledge:
“We, the students of Schwarzman College at Tsinghua University, do pledge that we will hold true to the principles of self-discipline and social commitment, striving for a better understanding of China and the world, in service of our own nations and in the service of all humanity.”
Schwarzman College represents the past, present and future for all of us. The past, our myriad backgrounds that led us here and enrich our experience. The present, in embracing every moment of opportunity and friendship. And the future, in our dedication towards fulfilling our aspirations, wherever they may lead, knowing that our fellow scholars are beside us.
Here is looking forward to a great year, to our many failures, many learnings and to being lifelong friends.
Thank you.
